Friends of Sapelo

Where would we be without our Friends? Created in 1995, the Friends of Sapelo (FOS) is a volunteer organization sponsored and coordinated by the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve. The Friends of Sapelo organization supports the research, education, and outreach efforts of the Reserve through work projects, monitoring initiatives, and interpretive programs. Dedicated to the understanding, appreciation and stewardship of estuaries and associated coastal habitats, FOS activities are designed to support the natural, cultural and historical resources of Sapelo Island.

FOS participate in the Georgia Adopt-a-Stream program, Ocean Conservancy National Marine Debris Monitoring Program (beach sweep), and NOAA Southeast Phytoplankton Monitoring Network each month. In addition, volunteers participate in the following:

• Clean-up projects at the lighthouse, nature trail, and tabby ruins on Sapelo Island;

• Docent program for visiting school groups;

• Various research efforts including the Maritime Forest Restoration project; and

• Beach slope monitoring.
