The Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (SINERR) was established in 1976 as part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS). SINERR is a partnership, administered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources – Wildlife Resouces Division, Game Management Section, and managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Situated along the Georgia coast, Sapelo Island is home to diverse habitats, including salt marshes, tidal flats, and upland forests, as well as a rich cultural history. The Reserve was created to facilitate scientific research and environmental monitoring, while also providing opportunities for education and community engagement. Over the years, SINERR has become a key site for ecological research, contributing to the understanding of coastal and estuarine processes, and supporting conservation efforts in the face of climate change and other environmental challenges.
The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) is a network of protected areas along the U.S. coastline, dedicated to the study and conservation of estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Managed by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) in partnership with state and local agencies, the NERRS provides a platform for long-term scientific research, monitoring, education, and stewardship to support the health and sustainability of estuaries. These reserves serve as “living laboratories” where scientists, students, and resource managers collaborate to address critical environmental challenges such as climate change, habitat degradation, and coastal development.
